⏱Overtime Pay Calculator
How overtime is calculated
- Regular hours = the first 40 hours of the workweek
- Overtime hours = hours worked beyond 40
- Overtime rate = regular rate × 1.5
- Total pay = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × overtime rate
Example: 48 hours at $20/hour → 40 × $20 = $800 regular, 8 × $30 = $240 overtime, $1,040 total.
The regular rate for overtime purposes generally includes non-discretionary bonuses and shift differentials, which can make the true overtime rate higher than 1.5 × your base wage. This calculator uses the rate you enter.

Frequently asked questions
When do I get overtime under federal law?
Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), covered non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Weekends and holidays are not automatically overtime.
Can my employer average hours over two weeks?
No. The U.S. Department of Labor says each workweek stands alone: a fixed, recurring 168-hour period. 45 hours one week and 35 the next still means 5 overtime hours in the first week.
Does my state have different overtime rules?
Some do. California, for example, also requires daily overtime after 8 hours and double time after 12 hours in a day. Use the 'Custom' option for those cases and check your state labor department.
Is everyone eligible for overtime?
No. Some salaried executive, administrative and professional employees are exempt. Exemption depends on duties and salary, not on job title alone.
