▦Tile & Flooring Calculator
How it's calculated
- Area = length × width (sq ft)
- Area of one tile = tile width (in) × tile length (in) ÷ 144
- Tiles = area × (1 + waste %) ÷ tile area, rounded up
- Boxes = area × (1 + waste %) ÷ sq ft per box, rounded up
Frequently asked questions
How much extra tile should I buy?
Add about 10% for a straight layout, 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, and more for small rooms with many cuts. Keep a few spare tiles for future repairs; matching dye lots later can be hard.
Does grout width matter?
For tiles 6 inches and up, a 1/8 to 1/4 inch grout line changes the count very little, and the waste allowance covers it. This calculator ignores grout width.
How do I use this for laminate or vinyl plank flooring?
Enter the plank size in inches (e.g. 7 × 48) and the square feet per box printed on the carton.
